Artist statement
‘ I peer into 西湖(West Lake) searching for the reflection of my ancestors’ is a ’ , collection of sculptural paintings which respond to theorist Stuart Halls’ understanding of culture as “exceedingly slippery, vague and amorphous” (Hall, 1983) . onto distended calico supports, Mei Lin peers into the half Through layering familial imagery formed and murky histories that accumulate to form identity. The amorphous works are in a perpetual state of flux, both revealing and hiding aspects of the self.
