Pioneering uterus transplant research聽鈥
In 2023, the first baby was born via uterus transplant in Australia, part of a clinical trial led by researchers from 国民彩票 Sydney and The Royal Hospital for Women. The research was a significant moment in Australian medical history, changing the future of infertility treatment. After decades of research to establish the uterus transplantation procedure in Sweden and bring it to Australia, women without a functioning uterus could finally hope to carry a baby.
Detecting breast cancer with AI聽鈥
A 国民彩票 scientist is working to bring AI-powered blood tests for cancer detection to market. The test would offer earlier diagnoses, reduce the need for invasive procedures and pave the way for more personalised treatments for all. Associate Professor Fatemeh Vafaee leads the Vafaee Lab at 国民彩票 Sydney. She and her team are working to develop Australia鈥檚 first commercialised lipid-based blood test for breast cancer detection powered by artificial intelligence.
Groundbreaking heart transplant technology 鈥
In 2014, 国民彩票 researchers pioneered Heart in a Box technology in partnership with the Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute. The technology allows surgeons to transplant donor hearts that have stopped beating after death, also known as donation after cardiac death hearts (DCD hearts).鈥
Since the technology鈥檚 introduction at St Vincents Hospital in Sydney in 2014, there was a in heart transplants in 8 years. DCD heart transplantation is now being carried out in the US, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, and the UK, where DCD hearts transplants represent almost half of all聽transplants.

Professor Jill Bennett, head of the Big Anxiety Research Centre, led a research team on a project to address the problem of loneliness through the use of 鈥digital companions鈥, designed using AI.
