AsÌýa demonstrator, your role is to provide casual teaching support to your course convenor. Your duties as a demonstrator may include:ÌýÌý
- demonstrating in tutorials and laboratory sessionsÌý
- workshops
- marking within term
- fast feedback supportÌýÌý
Demonstrating is a crucial aspect of the delivery of the School's teaching program. As a demonstrator, you’ll be gaining valuable experience and improving your communication and presentation skills while broadening your subject knowledge and expertise.

To get the most out of your demonstratorÌýexperience, considerÌýyour study workload alongside potential responsibilities. ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering recommends that:Ìý
- Undergraduates don't exceed 15-20 hours of demonstrator work per weekÌý
- Postgraduate don't exceed 20-30 hours of demonstrator work per weekÌý
- Full-time research students discuss their envisaged weekly hours of demonstrating work with their supervisor before accepting any rolesÌý
- Research students do not work as demonstrators in their first or final termsÌý
- Students who have failed a progress review do not apply for a demonstrator position.Ìý
Demonstrator hoursÌý
International students:Ìýare usually permitted to work a maximum of 20 hours per week.ÌýPlease refer to your student visaÌýto confirm any working restrictions required.Ìý
External applicants:Ìýif you’re not currently studying or working for ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ, you’re permitted to work a maximum of 35 hours per week.Ìý
¹úÃñ²ÊƱ employees:Ìýyou aren’tÌýpermitted to exceed the working maximum of 35 hours per week, across the University.Ìý
Applicants are responsible for ensuring they do not exceed maximum work hours.Ìý

As a demonstrator, you’ll play a vital role in the teaching and learning experiences offered at the School. To ensure a positive experience for yourself, your convener and students be sure to:Ìý
- Be familiar with the subject and able to answer basic questions confidently and accurately.Ìý
- Attend the necessary training programs before commencing workÌý
- Follow theÌýÌýwhich deals with confidentiality, discrimination, health and safety, harassment,ÌýetcÌý
- Conduct yourself as a professional: dress-code, language, punctuality,ÌýetcÌý
- Provide demonstration at the highest standard possibleÌý
- Conduct all course communication and teaching activities in EnglishÌý
- Always follow the directions of your course convenorÌý
- Contact your courseÌýconvenors if you have any feedback on the activities, assessments and how students performÌý
- Meet the requirements of your contract and ensure you comply with the working hours allocated to you (see Workload Restrictions)Ìý
- Get help and advice when requiredÌý
- Perform your health and safety dutiesÌý
- Take part in a review program. Course convenors will attend one of your tutorial/labs and provide feedback accordingly

Around Week 8 of term, the MME Demonstrator Application Webform will be opened for approximately 2 weeks for positions in the upcoming term.

Successful demonstrator applicants: Notification & interviewsÌý
The School receives close to 800 demonstrator applications eachÌýyear.WithÌýso many applications annually, demonstrating for the School is a very competitive process.Ìý
The course convenor will contact shortlisted applicants.Ìý
They may be required to attend an informal interview (in person, online or over the phone; and maybe in a group) to discuss:Ìý
- course contentÌý
- expertise requiredÌý
- duties/tasks requiredÌý
- hours requiredÌý
- expectations and qualifications
- material and resources requiredÌý
If successful in obtaining a demonstrator position, the School will send a welcome Onboarding email to your ¹úÃñ²ÊƱ email account.Ìý
If unsuccessful, you’re welcome to apply again next year.Ìý

If selected for the job, your initial work schedule will be entered into the web-interface CASTLE by the Course Convenor.Ìý The work schedule data in CASTLE will then be automated to the University’s recruitment platform, UniHire in order to issue you an employment contract for the term and complete all relevant casual academic hire processes.
